In today’s current job environment, a person may have a bit of difficulty in finding a job. Companies aren’t exactly on a recruiting spree with the recession and all that hanging above our heads. However, some enterprising people are taking the initiative and starting their own businesses ranging from simple flower arranging to catering, to manufacturing. If you’re a bit of a shutterbug, you can probably join in on this trend. Being a photographer today doesn’t require you to have a professional photo studio fully stocked with photo studio equipment. All you need is a good camera, a good eye and a willingness to get your hands dirty.

First of all, you need to define what you’re going to be taking photos of. Are you just some fellow taking portrait photos for IDs or are you willing to go out and cover some events? Knowing what you’ll be capable of doing in terms of photography jobs can help narrow down your market and help you focus on your customer base.

Next, is your camera good enough? People aren’t exactly going to trust that you could professionally take their photos unless you’re using something professional. There are several cheap digital SLR cameras that project a business atmosphere; using the little pink travel cameras isn’t exactly going to help you get customers. Also, go for digital cameras – film-based cameras rely on development studios and you’re trying to cut down on your operating costs. A good digital camera and a computer are all that you need to start.

Finally, you need to get some customers. Of course, you can advertise in the paper but since you already have a computer, it would be better to post on the Internet instead. Connect with people via Craigslist or Facebook. Word-of-mouth and social networks help greatly in getting you jobs. Offer your services cheap, give good service and you’ll have people recommending you for more and more jobs.
